A helical pile (also called a helical pier or screw pile) is a steel shaft with helical plates welded to the lead section, torqued into the ground with a hydraulic drive motor to develop load capacity through direct bearing against competent soil. Typical installations reach 10 to 80 feet deep with design load capacities of 20 to 200+ kips per pile, using shaft diameters from 1.5 inches (square) to 4.5 inches (round) depending on structural loads. Installation torque correlates to design load capacity, so every pile is verified as it installs. Common applications include foundation support for new commercial construction, underpinning for existing buildings, tiebacks for retaining walls, and residential foundation stabilization.
