Exploration

Budinger & Associates, Inc. has a reputation for conducting effective, site-specific explorations through the use of in-house drilling and laboratory capabilities at a reasonable cost. Incorporation of our recommendations results in safe, practical, and cost effective solutions to geotechnical and environmental challenges.

Exploratory Drilling
Budinger & Associates, Inc. owns and operates its own drilling equipment, including truck-mounted Mobile B-57 and trailer-mounted Longyear 28 drill rigs. Our personnel are fully qualified and trained for hazardous material site work.

Though exploration capabilities serve as a support function for our geotechnical and environmental engineering departments, they exceed the capabilities of most specialized drilling contractors. Far from one-dimensional, we apply the most appropriate methods to meet the unique conditions and client needs of each project - methods that include test pit excavation, air rotary drilling, electronic cone penetration testing (CPT), diamond coring, and direct push continuous sampling, along with conventional hollow stem auger drilling and more.

Our limited access capabilities include four-wheel drive heavy-duty trucks, track carriers, and barges. Our track carriers apply less than 6-psi ground pressure and climb 35-degree slopes. Our barges support over 5 tons, yet require no special truck permits and launch directly without cranes.

Our air rotary drilling capabilities include 4-inch to 6-inch air rotary overburden systems that enable borings to be advanced in difficult materials such as boulders, bedrock, and debris including concrete, bricks, tires, and timber - even metal in some cases! To reach greater depths, tools such as the 4 and 6-inch overburden systems can be telescoped. Rapid probing can be completed with uncased small-diameter tools such as 2 to 3-inch air rotary bits.
We are equipped for sampling and field-testing with 2-inch "Standard" to 4-inch diameter split-spoon samplers, as well as 3-inch diameter thin-walled "Shelby" tube samplers. An automatic SPT hammer is available. Both drills are equipped with a cathead and a 140# hammer with 30-inch free-fall heights. Our diamond coring capabilities include conventional and wireline core barrels for penetration and continuous recovery of rock and stiff clay formations.

CPT, Inclinometer Surveys, Direct Push Tools

Our electronic CPT equipment provides the capability to profile tip resistance, sleeve resistance, and pore water pressure continuously with depths up to 150 feet. We've built feed frames with quick-connections enabling us to complete CPT soundings with various models of backhoes and track-excavators without the need for a dedicated push rig or drilling machine.

Our inclinometer equipment provides the capability to accurately measure lateral ground deformations for evaluating site preloading, landslides, foundations, embankments, retaining walls, shafts, tunnels, and other structures. CPT and inclinometer equipment are regularly calibrated to provide repeatable and reliable results. We also offer continuous power probe sampling with a 2½-inch outside diameter by 1½-inch inside diameter discrete, dual-tube sampler.

This system reduces waste disposal on environmental projects and allows sampling groundwater at discrete depths. As with the telescoping capability of the 4 and 6-inch air rotary systems, the CPT equipment is capable of telescoping inside the dual-tube system.

Groundwater Monitoring Wells & Devices
Well drillers licensed by the Washington State Department of Ecology and Idaho Department of Environmental Quality complete monitoring well installations. We install pore pressure monitoring devices including well points, pneumatic and digital piezometers, and lysimeters. For water level measurements, our capabilities include conventional water level sounders and digital data collecting meters, which are deployable for a variety of time intervals from aquifer tests lasting a few hours to measurements of seasonal groundwater variations over several years.

Geophysical Exploration
Characterization of complicated subsurface conditions can often be significantly improved using geophysical methods such as modeling of earth D.C. resistivity, compression 'p' waves, and shear 's' waves. Geophysics can be effective at solving many subsurface problems, provided that experienced professionals apply appropriate methods and have a solid understanding of the project requirements, not just the ability to make colorful exhibits. Through a combination of in-house and subcontracted capabilities, BAI offers the necessary experience and problem solving ability to appropriately apply geophysical methods.

Other Specialized Field Testing Capabilities
BAI is experienced with numerous other field testing methods including slug testing, infiltration testing, plate load testing, site preloading, testing of foundation piles (compression, tension, and lateral loading), field California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testing, vane shear testing, and many others.
