Materials Testing and Special Inspection

Budinger & Associates, Inc. has provided excellent construction materials testing services since 1976. Our network of quality laboratories, complimented by our fleet of mobile laboratories, allows us to provide in-house testing for projects throughout the Northwest. Budinger provides fast, reliable test results that our clients can count on.

Budinger meets stringent inspection and certification requirements. We are recognized by agencies including Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) along with numerous cities and counties as a certified geotechnical, asphalt paving, materials testing and special inspection laboratory.

In accordance with our accreditation by AASHTO, we verify the calibration of test equipment utilizing a controlled Quality Assurance Program meeting the specifications in ANSI/ISO/IEC Standard 17025 and standards traceable to the National Institute for Standards and Technology. We also maintain a training program for our experienced staff of testing technicians and special inspectors that is overseen by registered professional engineers.

Construction Materials Laboratories

Our construction materials laboratory is capable of testing most structural materials utilized in modern construction. Testing is performed by trained and certified technicians per relevant American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC) or WSDOT Test Methods. In addition, custom or modified test procedures can be performed upon request. Some of our testing equipment and capabilities include:

Geotechnical Engineering Laboratories

Our accredited geotechnical engineering laboratory is equipped to perform tests needed in geotechnical engineering evaluations, including but not limited to:

  • In situ density and moisture content
  • Atterberg limits
  • Sieve analysis
  • Maximum dry density
  • Direct and triaxial shear
  • Consolidation
  • Expansion index
  • California bearing ratio
  • Soil-Cement mixture design

Materials tested are typically obtained from bulk or driven (SPT and Modified California) samples. Laboratory testing operations are overseen by a registered professional engineer. With the large amount of construction-related, time-sensitive work that Budinger performs, our laboratory understands the importance of and effectively accomplishes efficient turnaround times for testing.

Asphalt/Aggregate Laboratories

Budinger’s asphalt testing laboratories house excellent testing equipment, are staffed with technicians that have at least five years of experience, and are certified by WAQTC, NICET, and WSDOT under the independent assurance program. Our testing equipment enables us to perform design, quality assurance/quality control and research testing services that include:

The asphalt pavement division at Budinger often depends on its laboratory to provide accurate and rapid turnaround for demanding projects. On the occasion that a project requires onsite testing, the asphalt pavement division maintains a fleet of mobile laboratories that can be custom designed for the needs of each project.

Mobile Laboratories

Mobile laboratories are self-sufficient units set in trailers that are equipped appropriately based on the scope of testing to be performed and the project site conditions. Budinger can outfit a mobile laboratory for projects throughout the Northwest.

Mobile laboratories designed and built for on-site testing of aggregate production/crusher control or acceptance contain the following equipment and accessories:

  • Splitters for preparation aggregates for further testing in field conditions
  • Portable mechanical sieving equipment
  • Ovens for drying aggregates
  • Washing devices
  • Scales
  • Special aggregate testing equipment as required

Mobile laboratories designed and built for on-site testing of asphalt pavement contain the following equipment and accessories:

  • Asphalt ignition furnaces (NCAT)

Mobile laboratories designed and built for on-site testing of Portland cement concrete contain the following equipment and accessories:

  • Compressive testing machine
  • Fixtures for flexural strength and compressive strength testing
  • Calipers and micrometers for measuring specimens
  • Thermometers and multi-channel temperature recorders for monitoring temperature of test specimens
  • Curing containers, thermal insulated containers for temperature matching curing of cylinders for compressive strength
  • Equipment for sampling concrete, fabricating test specimens and testing properties of fresh concrete
  • Stationary mounted water tanks with pumps
  • Curing/storage devices for transferring specimens not tested in the field to stationary or portable laboratory facility
